Jam and Jazz Camp is in its 10th year! Our summer dates are July 9-20th.
It has always been my vision to follow the bliss of collective music and our 10 year course has been both linear and quantum. WEEK #1 is our time to embrace and support the youngest in their musical life. Our door is open to 6 -11 year olds who come to join our Beginner or Intermediate “play groups” sometimes with a parent or grandparent as companion. This week has both large group activities (including drum/ song circles and dance) and small group activities like instrument making and what we call Sound Exploratorium. The Sound Exploratorium is a bit like what are called sectionals. Because we are hands on, experiencing instruments by family, feeling, describing and connecting with sound by vibration this might be called pre-sectional. Trained professional musicians share and demonstrate- kids are guided to try the instruments finding the sound themselves. This is where a young musician can find a connection to horns, reeds, guitar-bass, organ, piano, drum kit, African Djembe and more.
Our WEEK #2 is time for our older students to be served in their exploration of styles of music, their instrument of study, the desire to try new instruments, and build confidence in jazz, funk, rock and folk forms, vocal and improvisational techniques. The week is built around our ensemble with full band practice in the morning, sectionals in the mid day and adding vocals, free form/improv and new music in the afternoon. Some of the musicians joining this ensemble are adults who are returning to music or rebuilding basic skills in an ensemble setting.
The two weeks conclude with a reception TBD and a performance. This year’s performance will showcase musicians from both weeks on July 20 Alpine Kiwanis Brat Days 3-4 PM Harlem and Alpine location.
- We will now encourage musicians to join in ANY of the activities including partial day attendance and selecting days during the week when special events are offered.

* To offer Jam and Jazz Camp we must meet some significant expenses such as advertising/promotion, professional staff stipends, snacks and breakfast, tee shirts, printing. Our rate is well below that of comparable camps in other communities. Many have donated to offset our costs. Some contribute funds towards tuition of kids they do not know. All tuition adjustments are private.
